Procrastination equals Cold and Hungry
By Brian Murray
“Never put off until tomorrow what you can do the day after tomorrow”. Mark Twain
Unfortunately this seems to be a common way of thinking in today’s world. Most people think, “it really doesn’t matter”. Well a lot of our customers have found out the hard way that procrastination is not a good idea. We started getting calls in July from people looking to purchase firewood for the Fall/Winter burning season. These people know from previous years that the “early bird gets the worm” and this year would prove to be even more so than most. The high price of oil has turned a lot of people into using their wood stove for a source of heat as opposed to a decoration in the corner, to be used a handful of times during the Winter.
By September of this year we were all but sold out of our premium dry firewood. This is a little sooner than usual, but not a lot. Then all the procrastinating customers started calling looking for premium wood, only to find it was in short supply, not only at our location but also across Nova Scotia in general. We were lucky to have a decent supply of our next best wood, which would work for most customers. This wood also is all but non-existent in most parts of the province. At one time we were 6 weeks behind on deliveries, and if we hadn’t stopped taking orders we could have easily been 12 weeks behind for a delivery. This entire hassle could have been avoided if these people had ordered in the Spring or Summer.
Here is another example:
In the early part of 2007 Blue Barn Farms was taking orders for Beef and Chicken for the Summer/Fall of 2007. After warning a few of our regular customers that you shouldn’t wait to long or you might be left without, they pre-ordered. A few decided that September was a better time to place their order for the Fall delivery. You can imagine the response when they were told “sold out till next June 2008 for Chickens and at least April 2008 for beef”. This all could have been avoided if they had signed up for our newsletter in the Spring, which warned of this pending situation, or if they had pre-ordered on our website order form. We try to do all things possible to keep our customers happy, but it requires that you order early. Even now it is not too early to order Beef, Chicken or Firewood for 2008. You can avoid the disappointment/stress, and it’s free to do. Just visit us at:
